TOURISM IN DOLORES HIDALGO, GUANAJUATO

"Cradle of Independence"
This colonial city was founded in 1610. It is called the "Cradle of Independence" because one of the most important facts of the Mexican History occurred in this city. On September 16th of 1810, the priest Miguel Hidalgo raised the mass to rebel against the Spaniards. This event point the beginning of the Independence War. In order to remember it, every year in the night between september 15th and 16th, the Mexican people join at the cities downtowns to celebrate and shout “¡Viva Mexico!”

Church Nuestra Señora de los Dolores
In front of this beautiful construction from XVIII century started the Mexican Independence War.
The House of Visitants (La Casa de las Visitas)
Located in downtown, the House of Visitants is a magnificent building from XVIII century, with six arcs on front side. Since 1940 it belongs to the federal government and every six years the Mexican President spends the night there in order to celebrate the Grito ceremony.

The Abasolo's House (Casa de Abasolo)
The Abasolo’s House is the place where the Independence hero Mariano Abasolo was born. Nowadays is the Municipal House.

The Independence museum
Located in an old prison, the Independence Museum presents the important events of Miguel Hidalgo’s life and popular art works.

El Museo Casa Hidalgo
The Hidalgo’s House Museum was the original house of this hero; he lived there since 1804 until 1810. This museum exhibits objects that belonged him and many Independence documents.
The flavored ice cream
One of the specialties of Dolores Hidalgo is its ice cream with delicious exotic savors. Some of these are mole, tequila, corn, alfalfa, rose petals, beer, chicharron (pork’s skin), avocado, shrimp and more traditional as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, etc. You can find them in every downtown’s corner.
Potteries and ceramics
Dolores Hidalgo is well-known for its important production and exportation of pottery and ceramic in talavera style. Rustic furniture is also produced here.
