GENERAL FACTS ABOUT GUANAJUATO STATE

Geographic situation: Central area of Mexico, surrounded by the states of Michoacán, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Jalisco.

Population: About 4 700 000 inhabitants.

Capital: Guanajuato

Geographical areas: Sierra Gorda, Sierra Central, El Bajío, Los Altos and Los Valles Abajeños.

Area: 30 589 km2

Average altitude: 2 000 m

Weather: It is pleasant all year long with variations between arid, templated and semihumid. The average temperature is between 18 and 20 degrees.

Flora: In the high plateau: pastures. In the mountains: pines and oaks forests. In the central hills: scrublands with cactus and agaves. In the lakes area: oaks, mexican cypres and eatable plants.

Fauna: In the Sierra Gorda: opossums, foxes, deers, armadillos and wild cats. In the slopes: rattlesnakes, coral snakes, rabbits and coyotes. In the valleys: ducks and raccoons.

Transportation: Guanajuato has modern highways and a good development bus system which offers easy and safe traveling. Also it has an air terminal with links to the most important cities in Mexico and USA: the International Airport of Bajío (BJX), located between Leon and Silao.
